January 17, 2025 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's tennis program looks to continue its ascension during the upcoming spring dual season, beginning its slate Saturday, Jan. 18, with a pair of matches against No. 18 Tennessee (2 p.m.) and Wake Forest (5 p.m.) in Winston-Salem at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
The Pirates posted an 11-8 record in 2024, marking the first winning ledger for ECU since 2019 when it racked up a school-record 22 victories. East Carolina welcomes the return of seven student-athletes from last year's squad, including a senior class comprised of Ines Bachir, Anne Lou Champion, Martina Muzzolon and Isabella Rivera Ortiz.
Â
Bachir and freshman Xenia Jeromin represent the Pirates' first nationally ranked doubles tandem since 2019, slotting 110th in the ITA. During the 2024 fall campaign, Bachir and Jeromin posted an impressive 10-2 record, highlighted by winning the doubles title at the Liberty Hidden Duals with victories over student-athletes from Richmond, Arkansas State and William & Mary. The duo also advanced to the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Individual Championships by picking up a win over North Texas' Stadfany Nformi and Lilly Schultz.
Â
Bachir and Jeromin are the sixth and seventh players in program history to garner a national ranking, joining Alisa Diercksen, Lisa Hofbauer, Celia Ruiz, Gillie Bailey and current head coach Kirstin Burgess.
Â
Tennessee, armed with a No. 18 ranking from the ITA, went 22-8 a season ago and reached the NCAA Team Championship Semifinals. Meanwhile, Wake Forest was 15-14 overall in 2024 and qualified for the NCAA Team Championships before falling to Vanderbilt in the first round.
Â
The Pirates and Lady Vols have never met on the court while ECU matches up with the Demon Deacons for the first time since March 26, 2017 – a 6-1 Wake Forest victory in Winston-Salem.
Â
Up Next: Following its opening weekend of competition, East Carolina makes its home debut Friday, Jan. 31, with a bout versus N.C. Central at 1 p.m. inside the River Birch Tennis Center.
