February 15, 2025 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team earned a split on its final day of the Pirate Clash, beating No. 22 Boston 4-1 before falling to UMBC 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Game One: East Carolina 4, No. 22 Boston 1
Kendall Frost once again had all the answers in slowing down No. 22 Boston's offense with another dominant performance in the circle as the Pirates defeated the Terriers, 4-1, in their first game on the third day of the Pirate Clash.
Emma Jackson hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead and ECU added three runs over the course of the fourth and fifth innings to gain enough separation from the Terriers down the stretch.
Boston finally got a run on Frost with a solo homer in the top of the seventh but the freshman maintained her composure and forced the Terriers to ground into a double play to seal the win.
Frost (3-2) picked her up third straight win in the circle, allowing just one earned run while tossing six strikeouts while Ava Johnson (0-1) took the loss.
Game Two: UMBC 4, East Carolina 3Â
After two scoreless innings to start the game, UMBC loaded the bases and plated the game's first run in the top of the third inning to take an early lead. ECU quickly responded in the bottom of the third on Johnson's three-run homer to take a 3-1 edge going into the fourth inning.
The Retrievers would not go away quietly, tying the game at 3-3 after a two-run blast over the left centerfield wall in the top of the fifth and UMBC took the lead on a solo home run in the top of the seventh to go in front 4-3.
ECU had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh but the Pirates could not get a runner past first base as the Retrievers picked up the win.
Frost (3-3) took the loss giving up to go-ahead run while Jerzie Nutile (1-0) picked up the win.
