GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina closes out its homestand this Wednesday evening as the Pirates host a pair of in-state foes, first facing UNCW at 4 p.m. before turning their attention to N.C. Central at 6:30 p.m.
Both games will be streamed via ESPN+ with Patrick Johnson (play-by-play) and Courtney Layton (analyst) on the call.
ECU is coming off a 2-1 showing in the Pirate Invitational last weekend, handling Loyola Chicago (10-5) and Canisius (8-0; 5 inns.) before losing the tournament finale to Boston College, 6-5, as the Eagles hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
Kanisha Anderson has had a strong start at the plate for ECU, batting .500 and the speedy sophomore has recorded a hit in nine of ECU's 12 games. Morgan Johnson went 9-of-12 at the plate over the weekend, including tying a career-high with four hits against Loyola Chicago to earn AAC Player of the Week honors. ECU currently has four players batting over .350. The two-headed monster of Kendall Frost (2.53 ERA, 21 strikeouts) and Taylor Apple (2.70 ERA, 36 strikeouts) leads the Pirates' pitching staff in the circle. Apple tossed a no-hitter against Canisius on Saturday.
UNCW enters Wednesday on a 10-game winning streak and the Seahawks feature a high-powered offense and a stout bullpen. Four Seahawks led by Madison Biddle (.415) are batting .400 or better and Makayla Huddleston is 6-1 in the circle with a 0.79 ERA and 30 strikeouts tossed. N.C. Central has lost five contests in a row and are 0-4 on the road this season. The Eagles are led at the plate by Kendall Smith, who is batting .435 and has tallied eight RBI while Simone Mack has been the top arm in the circle with a 3.50 ERA.
The UNCW Series
ECU leads the all-time series with UNCW 82-23 and the teams have met at least once in the last four seasons. The Pirates are 36-9 at home against the Seahawks but lost the last time UNCW came to town, 8-7, back on Mar. 23, 2022.
The N.C. Central Series
ECU leads the all-time series with N.C. Central 9-0 as the Pirates and Eagles just met last season with ECU winning 6-0 and 5-0 in a doubleheader at home.
