Pirates Fall At Elon, 8-7
March 25, 2025 | Softball
Elon, N.C. –  Kanisha Anderson and Annie Kate Dalton each recorded two hits but East Carolina was unable to hold off a late game rally from Elon as the Pirates fell to the Phoenix, 8-7, on a walk-off, two-run home run on Tuesday evening at Hunt Softball Park.
After the Pirates left a runner at second in the top of the first, Elon hit a single and a double to get into scoring position quickly. The Phoenix eventually scored on a wild pitch but Taylor Apple was able to minimize the damage, striking out the next two Elon batters.
Anna Sawyer recorded a double in the top of first, followed by Chloe Geijer drawing a walk and Joie Fittante hitting single to load the bases with two outs but ECU would leave three runners on with a ground out to first base.
The Pirates got on the board in the top of the third after Sawyer drew a walk to score Hannah Evans, tying the game at 1-1. Geijer drew her second walk of the day with the bases loaded to put the Pirates in front and ECU increased their lead to 3-1 after Trinity Nichols hit an RBI single to score Morgan Johnson. ECU tacked on four more runs to make it 7-1 before the teams went to the bottom of the third.
Elon mounted a rally, recording six hits and scoring five runs to pull within a run going into the fifth inning. The Pirates had a chance to slow down Elon's momentum in the top of the fifth but
ECU was unable to score Kylee Schojan from third with two outs.
After ECU was unable to score any runs in the top of the seventh, Elon took advantage, getting the tying run on base to set up Gabi Schaal's walk-off home run.
Apple (7-6) took the loss, giving up four hits and three runs.
