Chapel Hill, N.C. – East Carolina is set to visit Chapel Hill for the start of a four-game game road swing on Wednesday evening when the Pirates take on North Carolina at Anderson Softball Stadium.
The game is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra with Matt Krause (play-by-play) on the call.
ECU comes off a 4-0 week, defeating Norfolk State, 6-2, before recording its second conference series sweep of the season as the Pirates downed Memphis in three games at home last weekend. The Pirates' bats were hot all week, especially in the 17-1 win over Memphis on Saturday as Annie Kate Dalton and Gabby Fowler each hit grand slams to blow the game open with it being the first career home run for Fowler. Kendall Frost was dominant in the circle throughout the week as well, allowing no earned runs while picking up two wins and a save. Dalton and Frost were tabbed to the American Athletic Conference's Honorable Mention on Monday.
The Pirates are led at the plate by Kanisha Anderson's .438 batting average (2nd in AAC) and the speedy sophomore leads the team with 16 multi-hit games this season. Emma Jackson, Morgan Johnson and Annie Kate Dalton combine for 32 of the Pirates' 49 home runs, which is first in the league (27th in NCAA). Taylor Apple (3.12 ERA, 92 Ks) and Kendall Frost (3.60 ERA, 76 Ks) are the two main arms in the circle for ECU.
Dalton has reached base in 20 consecutive games while Anna Sawyer has recorded a hit in 10 straight contests. ECU is just one home run away from reaching 50 on the season which would be only the third time in the program's fast pitch era that they have eclipsed 50 home runs in a season. The Pirates' seven home runs in the 15-7 win at Charlotte on Mar. 28 tied for the second-most home runs in a single game in AAC Softball history.
Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina comes into Wednesday having been swept by Duke last weekend, but the Tar Heels are 21-3 on their home field this season with two of those losses coming in the last five games at home. Kat Rodriguez is one of four Tar Heels that is currently hitting above .400 with a .461 batting average while Carlie Myrtle provides power at the plate with 15 home runs. Britton Rogers leads North Carolina in the circle with a 3.28 ERA and a 6-1 record.
Last Time Out
UNC leads the all-time series 54-37 but the Pirates have won the last two games which both took place at Anderson Softball Stadium.
