Pirates Concede 90th Minute PK to Settle for 1-1 Draw with UNCW
August 28, 2025 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina soccer team played with the lead for over half an hour before seeing what looked to be a settled victory turn into a bitter draw in a 1-1 match with the UNCW Seahawks on Thursday night on Bill Clark Homes Field at Johnson Stadium.
Â
The Pirates (1-2-2) did get the game's opening goal in the 54th minute when Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram converted a pass from Holly Schlagel off of an Amy Mason cross; however, the goal was not necessarily true to the full measure of the game. For much of the contest it was UNCW (2-2-1) on the front foot and dominating possession.
Â
The Seahawks nearly scored on several occasions including a 24th minute strike by Allie Planeaux which sailed just high off of a brilliant pass into the box. In the 86th minute while trailing, Ayanna Parker got in behind the ECU defense and fired a dangerous shot which found the woodwork before sailing out of play.
Â
It should be noted that the latter play was done a player down. In a physical contest which saw six yellow cards overall, Rachel Fry's second booking in the 76th minute saw the Pirates playing woman up for the final 14 minutes and change of the contest. It was hard to tell, though, as UNCW switched into a different gear and repeatedly pushed forward for opportunities to equalize.
Â
Their last and best chance came with just 45 seconds remaining when Planeaux cut back near the top of the 18 and was plainly fouled by Ella Steck for a Seahawks penalty. Planeaux took it herself and buried it.
Â
In the end it was a draw which felt like a loss for an ECU side which had won four straight against the Seahawks, including a decisive 3-0 result a season ago. The team played uncharacteristic soccer at times and will enter a two-game road swing still hunting for their first home win of the season.
Â
Up Next: Speaking of that road trip, the Pirates do have a much-needed bye on Sunday to rest up and get healthy before hitting the road to App State on Sept. 4 for a 6 p.m. contest.
