Pirates Secure 1-0 Result at App State
September 04, 2025 | Soccer
BOONE, N.C. ā The East Carolina soccer team defeated App State, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium. Despite the close margin on the scoreboard, it was largely a controlled victory for the Pirates with positive margins on shots, shots on goals and corner kick opportunities.
Ā
The Pirates (2-2-2) struck early with a seventh-minute goal by Alyssa Tucker which wound up being good enough for the win. The goalāTucker's first of the season came on a feed from the right side by Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram to the right foot of the junior forward whose shot ricocheted off of a Mountaineer defender before sneaking past goalkeeper Anna Claire Jacobi who got a glove to the ball but was unable to prevent it from crossing the goal line.
Ā
Holly Schlagel nearly scored a banger in the 23rd minute when she created space and fired a driven left-footed shot at goal which was punched away from upper left corner by Jacobi.
Ā
Despite a pair of App State (3-3-0) corners, resulting in one shot, the Pirates remained on the front foot for much of the remainder of the first half as they took a 1-0 lead into the break. Ā The Mountaineers did have a score waived off for offside in the 44th minute when Reagan Sturgill looked to have an equalizing goal but was a step behind the Pirates back line when the cross was sent in.
Ā
The Action picked up to a torrid pace for a while in the middle part of the second half. First, the Pirates had a great chance in the 57th minute when Juliana Viera got on the end of a corner kick and had her bouncing header saved away by Hanna Skogsforsāwho entered in goal at the half for the Mountaineersāfrom the top right corner of the goal for another corner which proved unfruitful. Then, in the 59th the Mountaineers probably should have scored a goal. On a countering chance, Ellie Garrison received a cross in close and looked to have the entire left half of the net to score on but missed wide of the post with her lunging header.
Ā
ECU goalkeeper Olivia Dietrich was finally called into action in the 70th minute when she went airborne, making a diving stop on Izzi Wood's driven shot at the right post. It was her first save of the day and it was a good one to keep App State off the board. The result was Dietrich's first shutout for the Pirates as she played the full 90 for the fifth time on the season.
Ā
As the minutes waned, the Pirates did well to maintain possession, taking the ball to the corner flag and denying the Mountaineers any real opportunities to see the clock to zeroes with the 1-0 result holding.
