Pirates Drop Season Opener At Liberty, 2-0

Lynchburg, Va. – The East Carolina soccer team fell to Liberty in its season opener, 2-0, at Osborne Stadium on Thursday evening.Â
Olivia Dietrich recorded 10 saves in the box, which was the most for her in a Pirates uniform. The 10 saves also marked the most in a game for the Pirates since the 2019 season.
Much like in last season's opener, Liberty struck quickly with a goal at the two-minute mark, forcing the Pirates to play on their heels early. ECU kept Liberty at bay for the rest of the half with scrappy defense and timely saves by Dietrich.
The Pirates picked up their attack to start the second half and had a scoring opportunity in the opening minutes but AJ Mayock's attempt could not get over the outstretched arms of Liberty's Ainsley Leja.
Liberty eventually broke through ECU's defense and took a 2-0 lead on Avenley Monteith's goal at the 64-minute mark which gave the Flames enough of a cushion down the stretch.
