
Pirates Turn In Dominant Showing At TYR Fall Classic With First Place Finish

Doral, Fla. – The East Carolina women's swimming and diving team opened the 2026-27 season with a dominant showing, placing first out of seven teams, at the TYR Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates competed against host FIU along with Tulane, Florida Atlantic, Keiser, Florida Gulf Coast and St. Thomas.
ECU totaled 1,174 points as a team, following by FIU (1,060.50), Florida Atlantic (1,047), Tulane (1,018.50) and Florida Gulf Coast (984).Â
"Dominating performance from start to finish," head coach Matthew Jabs said. "We faced a talented group of teams including three conference rivals and I cannot express how proud of these women I am. The energy, fight, and togetherness they showed throughout this meet was fantastic. It's what ECU Swimming and Diving is all about. Now it's time to get back to work."
The Pirates got off to a strong start on day one as the 400 medley relay team of Carlie Clements, Peyton Scott, Tanith Mueller and Mikayla Durkin placed first with a time of 3:45.47 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Durkin, Clements, Isabelle Schroeder and Alena Gemici also placed first with a time of 1:33.12.
ECU swept all three heats in the 400IM with Ava Vercollone (4:24.78), Abbey Pickel (4:29.07) and Mariia Shyrikova (4:30.61) all winning their respective heats. Tanith Mueller placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.98 while Lilou Alzaix also won her heat in the event with a time of 57.93. Clements finished first in the 100 backstroke while Aaliyah Schiffel and Ashlyn Loftin won their heats in the 100 breaststroke and Alena Gemici won her heat in the 50 free.
The Pirates continued their strong performances to close out the classic on Saturday, with 10 first place finishes including a sweep of the 200 backstroke and Vercollone recording the fastest 200IM time at the event of 2:04.78.
