Pirates Fall in Double Overtime To Wichita State, 92-89
February 18, 2026 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jordan Riley scored a career-high 40 points but East Carolina fell in double overtime to Wichita State, 92-89, on Wednesday night inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Riley's 40-point outburst marked the first time a Pirate scored at least 40 in a game since Anton Gill scored 40 against Maryland on Jan. 9, 1994.
Giovanni Emejuru added 16 points and Demitri Gardner scored 14 points for the Pirates (9-17, 4-9 American) who held a four-point lead with 18 seconds left but a four-point play from the Shockers' Kenyon Giles extended the game.
TJ Williams led Wichita State (17-10, 9-5 American) with 27 points while Giles added 24 and made two big shots to extend the game for the Shockers.
After Wichita took an early 4-2 lead, the Pirates used a 9-2 run to jump in front 13-6 with 14 minutes left. The Shockers would retake the lead with eight minutes left in the first half and go up by as much as seven, forcing a Pirate timeout with 3:53 left before halftime.
The Pirates went on a 7-2 run down the stretch to make the score 35-33 after a Riley steal and slam but the Shockers went into the break ahead 37-33.
Riley and the Pirates got off to a strong start in the second half as the senior scored 11 of ECU's first 13 points of the half to put his team in front 46-44 with 16 minutes left in the game. Both teams traded the lead over the next four minutes until ECU took the lead on Gardner's second-chance basket with 10:27 left to make it 57-55.
ECU was never able to increase its lead to more than five and after Eli DeLaurier split a pair of free throws to make the score 69-65 with 18 seconds left, the Shockers converted on a four-point play to tie the game at 69 and send the contest to overtime.
Riley quickly converted back-to-back baskets to put ECU in front 73-69 in the first overtime, but Wichita State would not go away as Giles sank a deep three and Williams and Will Berg scored inside to keep the Shockers in it.
Holding a two-point lead, the Pirates appeared to have the game in control after Wichita State came up empty with six seconds left but an ECU turnover on an out-of-bounds play allowed Giles to pick up the ball and hit a pull up with three seconds left as the game went to a second overtime.
Once again, the Pirates started the extra period strong and were up 89-86 on Riley's jumper with just over a minute remaining but Wichita State would close out the game, scoring the final six points.
