
Pirates Drop Series Opener To UAB, 3-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team dropped its series opener in conference play for the fourth time this season as the Pirates fell to UAB, 3-1, on Friday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Kanisha Anderson and Hailey Deter both had multiple hits for the Pirates (22-13, 6-4 American) who outhit UAB 9-6 but two crucial errors in the third inning allowed two runs from UAB.
The Blazers got on the board first after two miscues in the Pirate infield led to UAB taking a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning. UAB extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning as the Pirates struggled to get runners into scoring position.Â
Lillian Martineau hit a double to start the bottom of the fifth and would later score on a sac fly from Anna Sawyer to make the score 3-1.
The Pirates had another opportunity to close the gap in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third but ECU was unable to get a runner across home plate as UAB held 3-1 lead going into the final inning.
ECU quickly retired the Blazers' three batters but the Pirates' first three batters in the bottom of the seventh inning were all forced into outs to end the game.
Julia Apostolakos (11-5) tossed six strikeouts in the loss while Olivia Cummings (6-6) picked up the win and Hannah Cole earned her first save of the year.
