Pirates Win Prematurely Against No.16 Coastal Carolina Due to Weather
March 08, 2026 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. - Due to inclement weather, East Carolina and No. 16 Coastal Carolina called the game amid the seventh inning, in which the Pirates topped the Chanticleers 10-4 in six full innings. Â
The Pirates were unable to generate offense in the first inning, but the second quickly turned the momentum in East Carolina's favor. Auston Irby led off the frame with a single to right field before Jack Herring followed with a towering shot 350 feet to left, marking his second home run of the weekend and giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead over the Chanticleers.Â
Making his second start of the season, Alex Bouche wasted no time making an impact, lacing a first-pitch single to keep the rally alive. East Carolina continued to chip away throughout the inning, collecting four hits and placing four runners on base.Â
The Pirates carried that momentum into the next inning as Matt Lashley sparked another rally with a double into the right-center gap. Grady Lenahan worked a five-pitch walk before Irby laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Bouche continued his strong day at the plate, improving to 2-for-2 with a hard ground-ball single up the middle that plated two runs.Â
Jeff Sabater followed with his first double of the season, putting runners on second and third before Wallace delivered in the clutch, lining a ball past the shortstop to bring both runners home. Burress then added to the Pirates' surge, doubling East Carolina's hit total on the day while driving in another run to extend the lead to 7-0 in the top of the third.Â
Lashley kept the inning alive with two outs later in the frame, ripping a hard liner past the shortstop to allow Burress to race home from second and push the Pirates' advantage even further.Â
Coastal Carolina responded quickly after East Carolina's big inning, stringing together a pair of hits to put two runners on base. The Chanticleers' cleanup hitter then delivered the big swing of the inning, launching a no-doubt three-run home run to trim into the Pirates' lead. Colby Weber was able to regroup on the mound, ending the threat with a strikeout and forcing Coastal to leave additional runners stranded.Â
With little to no action in the sixth, the Pirates are able to play a full half inning of the seventh until ultimately going into a rain delay. Due to the premature call of the game, the contest reverts to the last full inning, in which the final score posts 10-4.Â
Every starter was able to post a hit on the day, with Barron leading the charge going 3-for-4, with Bouche and Lashley right behind him, both posting .500 on the day. Pitching from Colby Weber and Nick Moran, both going three innings and both posting three strikeouts.Â
The Pirates come home to Clark LeClair on Tuesday, March 10, Â for their first midweek of the week against Old Dominion, and quickly making their way to Williamburg for an away midweek at William & Mary on March 11.Â
