GREENVILLE, N.C. – Gabby Fowler went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run but East Carolina fell to North Carolina, 7-3, on Tuesday evening at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Julia Apostolakos tossed five strikeouts in the circle for the Pirates (25-21, 9-9 American) who held Carolina's high-powered offense without a home run for only the fourth time this season.
Fowler's leadoff double in the bottom of the second but ECU in early scoring position and after Lillian Martineau's sac bunt, the Pirates got on the board first on Addison Lund's sac fly.
UNC knotted the game up in the top of the third on Sanaa Thompson's RBI double and the Tar Heels extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth after a Pirate error allowed two runs to score.
ECU attempted to rally in the bottom of the fifth after Anna Sawyer hit a double to set up Trinity Nichols' RBI single. The Pirates stayed alive in the inning thanks to a Tar Heel error and ECU was able to plate another run to make the score 4-3 going into the sixth inning.
The Tar Heels put the game out of reach after Lexie Roberts' three-run single as the Pirates' final six batters failed to reach first base.
