WEEKEND VS. WICHITA STATE RECAP
The weekend series at Clark-LeClair Stadium saw East Carolina secure a 2-1 series victory over Wichita State, though the weekend ended on a bittersweet note. The Pirates opened the series with clinical efficiency, winning both Friday and Saturday games by identical 7–1 scores. During these opening matchups, ECU's pitching staff remained in total control, supported by a balanced offensive attack. Jack Herring provided the power on Friday with a massive two-run home run, while Jeff Sabater was the catalyst on Saturday, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to help clinch the series early.Â
However, the quest for a sweep fell apart during Sunday's finale, as the Shockers avoided the shutout with a dominant 13–1 victory. The Pirates' pitching staff struggled significantly with their command, surrendering 11 walks and hitting three batters. Wichita State took full advantage of these miscues, particularly with two outs, scoring ten of their thirteen runs in clutch situations.Â
JOSEPH WEBB HONORABLE MENTION
One of the pirates' top relievers, Joseph Webb, was named American Conference Honorable Mention for his stellar performance throughout the conference series win against Wichita State. Throughout the weekend, Webb made two significant appearances, going through a total of 6.1 innings, only giving up three hits, no runs and one walk. Webb had a season high of six strikeouts on Friday night and totaled 11 on the weekend. He ended up earning the win on Friday night and earning a save on Saturday night. Â
TOUCHING BASE
Jack Herring is currently on a 40-game on-base streak for the Pirates, now being one of 18 Pirates to have reached base in at least 30 games since 1998. Herring has been able to reach base safely in every game he has started this season, with 40. Herring is currently standing fourth overall in longest reached base streak, with two of the three athletes standing in front of him being in the Cliff Godwin Era. Ryley Johnson holds third overall with 44, with Connor Norby holding the longest reached base streak record with 56. Â
LAST TIME AGAINST OLD DOMINION
East Carolina utilized an explosive offensive performance and dominant combined pitching to defeat Old Dominion 11-0 on March 10 at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Pirates controlled the contest from the opening frame, scoring in every inning to secure a victory shortened to seven innings by the run rule.Â
The ECU pitching staff stifled the Monarchs' hitters, holding them to just two hits throughout the afternoon. Ryan Towers earned the win, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and one walk. Gavin Marley provided 3.0 innings of perfect relief to close the door, striking out four to seal the combined shutout.Â
Offensively, the Pirates tallied 10 hits, led by a standout performance from Jack Herring, who finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks. Austin Irby added two RBIs of his own, while the game reached its definitive end in the bottom of the seventh when Carlos Jacome launched a two-run home run to deep left field.Â
ABOUT OLD DOMINION
After starting the year with high-scoring wins against Quinnipiac and Niagara, the Monarchs navigated a demanding mid-season stretch against Sun Belt powerhouses and regional rivals. While the team sat at an even 20–19 record by late April, they hit their stride at a critical juncture, currently carrying a four-game winning streak that includes a dramatic extra-innings victory over Richmond and a dominant three-game sweep of Georgia Southern.Â
First pitch in Norfolk is set for 6:00 p.m. EST.Â
