May 03, 2026 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Kanisha Anderson and Anna Sawyer hit back-to-back home runs as East Carolina defeated UTSA 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The win marked the first conference series sweep of the year for the Pirates (32-24, 16-11 American) who will be the third seed in next week's American Conference Softball Championship and got head coach Shane Winkler his 500th career win.
Prior to the game, the Pirates honored their five seniors in Michaela Weber, Chloe Geijer, Mary-Kathryn Scott, Hailey Deter and Sawyer.
Anderson and Sawyer set the tone with their two homers and Weber hit an RBI single to put ECU ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first. UTSA plated a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-2.Â
The Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs and appeared to have taken the lead on a two-run single in the top of fourth but the umpires determined the batter was out of the box and the play was reversed.
The Pirates regained the momentum and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as ECU's defense made quick work of UTSA in the final two innings for the win.
Julia Apostolakos (17-11) earned the win and Sydney Rainford picked up her second save of the year.
