Luiza Borges, who played an integral role in perhaps the most successful four-year period in the annals of the East Carolina women[apos]s tennis program, is in her third season as assistant women[apos]s tennis coach with the Lady Pirates.
Borges joined Tom Morris[apos] staff in the spring of 2010 as a student assistant while completing requirements for her undergraduate degree and was elevated to a graduate assistant[apos]s position the following fall. She assists in all phases of the program, ranging from on-the-court duties to academic coordination.
A native of Brazil who spent her formative years in Portugal, Borges concluded a stellar Lady Pirate career that began in the fall of 2004 with an all-time singles record of 81-39 and a doubles mark of 67-34. Her 81 singles victories currently stand second among all women[apos]s tennis players in ECU history.
During Borges[apos] playing career under Morris, her on-the-court success and leadership helped the Lady Pirates post the top four single-season win totals in the program[apos]s 33-year existence - capturing a pair of 19-victory campaigns in 2006 and 2007 and two 17-triumph springs in 2005 and 2008.
Borges earned her bachelor[apos]s degree in business in 2010.
