Pirates Finish Second at Pirate Fall Intercollegiate
October 22, 2002 | Men's Golf
Eastern Kentucky earned its second straight win at the tournament, finishing with a two-day score of 853. Last year the Colonels won the tournament with a score of 837. ECU, Towson, and Charleston Southern finished two through four. Mercer and Elon each tied for fifth place.
"We really wanted to win and thought we were in a position to do so," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We played well this week, but Eastern Kentucky just played better. Our hats go off to them and the effort they gave out here this week. They just outplayed us."
Eastern Kentucky's Brandon Brown led all players after the first two-rounds of play on Monday with a score of 132. ECU's Jonathan Hill was just three strokes behind at 135 going into the third and final round on Tuesday. Brown shot 69 in round three, while Hill shot 66, placing the two men in a tie for first place at 201, 15 strokes under par. In order to determine an individual champion, the two men began a playoff round at the tenth hole, a par 5. The two were still tied after the tenth hole, and the playoff went on for four additional holes (five total) until Hill finally edged out the competition earning his first collegiate win. The 15 strokes under par was a school best, braking Scott Campbell's record set in 1999. Both men broke the tournament record which was last year set by EKU's Brad Morris at 13 under par.
"I am really proud of Jonathan and the way he played," said Williams. " His play was unbelievable in really harsh conditions. The course was running long, and it was extremely windy and rainy out here this week. He has played extremely well all fall, and I'm glad he was able to earn his first collegiate win here at home."
In addition to Hill, Jason Harris also finished in the top 10, finishing seventh with a final score of 212 (73-69-70). Pitt Community College's Stephen Pugh finished in a tie for tenth with a final of 215. He shot 64 in yesterday's second round, which was the lowest one-round score of the tournament. Will Pope, competing individually for ECU, finished in a tie for 21st at 219.
The Pirates have one more tournament this fall. Next week the men will travel to Washington D.C., to participate in the Georgetown Hoya Invitational, October 27-28. Last year the Pirates finished second in tournament, and Frank Adams, III, now an assistant coach for ECU, won the individual title. The event will be held at Landsdowne Resort in Washington D.C.
