October 14, 2003 | Men's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's golf team came one stroke shy of claiming their third consecutive Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate championship on Tuesday after shooting a final round 304. The tournament was held at the par-72, 6,093-yard course at Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville, N.C.
On a wet and soggy morning at the Bradford Creek Golf Club, the Pirates (46-12-1) were unable to hold on to its four stroke lead heading into the final round. Nationally ranked Mississippi State (No. 26) took home the team championship after posting a third round 299 to finish with a final score of 894. ECU took second place with a 895 (296-295-304) and Western Carolina (295-306-296=897) claimed third place behind the play of Brandy Anderson.
Anderson, claimed the individual championship after posting a 54-hole tournament record of 215, which included a final round 69. Mississippi State's Amanda Mathis came in second with a 218 (71-74-73).
A pair of Pirates earned a share for third place as Jessica Krasny (73-69-78=220) and Adrienne Millican (70-75-75=220) each finished five strokes off the lead, while earning all-tournament team honors. Maragret Mitchell finished in a tie for 15th (74-76-75=225) and Jamie Quinn, playing as an individual, claimed a share of 19th after posting a one-over par final round to finish with a 227.
The Pirates were one of 17 teams participating in this year's tournament along with: Augusta State, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina (No. 45), East Tennessee State, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Longwood, Methodist, Mississippi State (No. 26), Old Dominion, Purdue (No. 31), Richmond, UNC Greensboro, and Western Carolina.
"Obviously we are disappointed that we didn't win our tournament," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "Mississippi State played great today around and on the greens, and that's why they are a top 25 team. Our team competed hard and we know what we need to work on for our next tournament. The good thing is that we beat some good teams, including Purdue, who is a top 30 program. I am extremely proud of Jessica and Adrienne for making the all-tournament team."
The women will be back in action on Oct. 24-26 at the Lady Paladin Intercollegiate in Greenville, South Carolina.
