Baker, a native of Jamestown, N.C., and product of Southwest Guilford High, is the reigning 3-A state champion at 200 and 400 meters, as well as the 2002 and 2003 state indoor 300-meter champion. Baker holds personal bests of 24.11 in the 200, 39.87 in the 300, and 55.80 in the 400. Her top time in the 300 meters came at the 2003 state indoor championships and set a new North Carolina record and ranked 14th nationally.
"Portia is a rising talent in the world of sprinting and will be a terrific addition to our program," Munson said. "Not only is she an outstanding student-athlete, but she has the heart of a true Pirate."
The ECU women's track and field team will open its 2003-04 indoor schedule at the Christopher Newport University Invitational on Dec. 7.
