Pirate Women Slotted No. 13 In USTFCCCA Southeast Region Ranking
January 28, 2020 | Women's Track and Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Based off of a strong start to the 2020 indoor season, the East Carolina women's track and field team has been tabbed No. 13 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region poll.
Â
It is the highest regional ranking for the women's squad since it was No. 13 back on Feb. 11, 2019.
Â
A pair of Pirates are in the top-15 nationally in their respective events. Junior Mackenzie Whitaker is No. 9 in the pentathlon after breaking the school record and posting an American Athletic Conference-best point total of 3,834 at the Hokie Invitational last weekend. Additionally, freshman Melicia Mouzzon sits 13th in the 60-meter run with a time of 7.30 which she ran in the finals of the event in Blacksburg. Her mark is the second fastest in the country among NCAA Division I freshmen and is tied for the conference lead.
Â
Another big performance at the Hokie Invitational occurred when junior Sommer Knight cleared 3.98 meters in the pole vault to take the American Conference's top spot. That mark puts her 43rd nationally.
Â
East Carolina's indoor campaign continues this weekend in Columbia, S.C. when the Pirates participate in the Carolina Challenge on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
