
Women's Track Wins Pirate Relays

GREENVILLE -- The East Carolina women's track team kicked off the outdoor season today in strong fashion, winning the Pirate Relays with a score of 114. The meet was held at the Bunting track and field.
The 100m saw top three finishes by the Pirates, Shirena James took the victory (11.91), followed by Terri Davenport in second (12.09) and Demiko Picott in third (12.28). The three combined with Star Coppin to win the 4x100 relay (46.65), she also placed second in the 100m hurdles (14.77). The girls rested and raced again in the 200m where James took first place (24.61), Davenport in second (24.76) and Picott in fifth (25.94).
In the1500m, Kelli Litten earned first (4:52.04), followed by Kim Lash in second (4:52.16) and Caitlin Littlefield in fourth (5:01.13). Lash also placed second in the 800m (2;23.42). In more distance running Littlefield placed second in the 3000m (11:06.16). Aspen Powell earned second in the 400m (59.91).
In the field events Krystel Pabey earned first in the javelin (39.69). Jennifer Aull took second in the hammer (43-83). Colleen McGinn took first place in the high jump (5-8) and Coppin took first in the long jump 5-61. In the pole vault Tammie Mentzel took first (11-3) followed by Nicole Marchewka (10-9).
"It was a really great meet today," said Head Coach Matt Munson. "It was really great conditions and a perfect day. We like to host this meet to give a the kids a chance to compete at home and have their families come out to cheer them on. We had some really terrific times, especially for this early in the season. It sets us up really strong for this early in the outdoor season."
Kristian Jorgensen took first in the 1500m (4:09.98) and the 4x800 relay team of Jorgensen, Kyle Yunaska, Kyle MacKenzie and Vance Stephenson took first place as well (8:19.37).
In the 400m hurdles Pat Martin took first place with a time of 55.05.
For the men Derrick Carr placed second in the triple jump (13-45). DeVon Carter placed first in the hammer (50-16) and third in the shot put (12-74). Mayso Porch placed second in the men's hammer (43-49).
The men's team was short today as some of the team's members are in South Carolina for another meet. "The 4x800 team ran really well," said coach Klepack.
