March 09, 2003 | Women's Golf
The Lady Pirates, ranked 38th nationally before last week's tournament, finished in first place with a 36-hole total of 579, a new school record, shooting 287 in round one and 292 in round two.
ECU finished 23 strokes ahead of the second place team, UNC Wilmington, which completed the tournament with a 36-hole total of 602 (301-301).
"I am real pleased with the victory today," said ECU head coach Kevin WIlliams. "To start off the spring with two victories in our first two tournaments is real big for us. This is the third win of the year going back to the fall. More importantly, this win puts us 2-1 against UNC Wilmington, who is ranked 35th in the country and ahead of us in the regional standings."
ECU placed four Pirates in the top seven, with Jessica Krasny, Heidi Helliesen, and Margaret Mitchell finishing in a three-way tie for second place shooting par for the tournament at 144, and Adrienne Millican shooting a three-over-par 147, tied for seventh place.
Augusta State's Leah Hart won the individual title with a combined score of 143, one under par for the tournament. The all-tournament team consisted of Hart (72-71-143), Krasny (71-73-144), Helliesen (70-74-144), Mitchell (72-72-144) and Morgan O?Banion (74-71-145) of Coastal Carolina.
The women will head to Tamp, Fla., March 17-18 to participate in the Waterlefe Invitational.
