PHILADELPHIA -- East Carolina's women's track team brought home an event championship and the men's team had several individuals qualify for finals to highlight the Pirates' performances on day two of the 109th annual Penn Relays on Friday.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Terri Davenport, Demiko Picott, Star Coppin and Shirena James ran a NCAA regional qualifying time to win the ECAC race championship with a time of 45.24. The clocking was the second fastest time in ECU history since 1997 and missed the ECU record by .08 seconds and the Penn ECAC record by .3 of a second.
"It was a great day," said Head Coach Matt Munson, "It is only the fourth time in ECU history to have a Penn Relays champion."
The men's 4x100 competed in the preliminaries today and are sitting in first place for Saturday's IC4A finals (41.11). The 4x200 team finished the prelims today with a time of 1:23.31 and will compete in Saturday's Championship of America finals. That team is currently in third place.
The 4x400 relay team ran a time of 3:09.44 and will compete in Saturday's finals.
The men will finish competition Saturday at the Penn Relays, while select members of the women's team will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to compete at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
