Women's Golfers Settle for 14th Despite Late Push

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Lady Pirates turned in their best round of the tournament on Saturday at the NCAA East Women's Golf Regional, but it was not enough to make up for the previous day's downfall as East Carolina finished in a tie for 14th place in the 21-team event.
The top eight teams of the regional, held at Winston-Salem's Salem Glen Country Club, advance to the NCAA National Championships.
A day after shooting 310 which dropped their ranking from sixth to 14th, the Lady Pirates scored a 298 on Saturday, two strokes better than their opening day round of 300. As a team, ECU finished the tournament 56 strokes over par (908) and 51 strokes behind regional champ Duke.
It was, nonetheless, an encouraging performance for an ECU women's golf program that is only in its third season of existence.
"We played better today, but overall for the tournament, we didn't putt very well," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "Our putting let us down and that's why we're through with the season. But I'm very pleased with how this season went and with the competitiveness that we showed here this weekend."
A pair of juniors led ECU's efforts this weekend as Jessica Krasny and Margaret Mitchell finished tied for 46 with three-day totals of 226. Sophomore Adrienne Millican and freshman Heidi Heillisen were each two strokes behind at 228, finishing tied for 61st. Junior Ashley Leonard was 98th with a score of 242. Krasny and Millican led the Lady Pirates on Saturday with matching third-round scores of two-over-par 73.
Along with Duke, the other teams that qualified for the national championship meet are Georgia, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida State.
Individually, Furman's Brandi Johnson won medalist honors with her eight-under 205.
