WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- East Carolina's women's golf team struggled out of the gates, but put together a strong finish on day one of the NCAA East Regional and currently holds sixth place in the 21-team event.
After playing the first round at the par-71, 6,116-yard course at Salem Glen Country Club, the Lady Pirates are at 16-over par and 12 strokes off the pace set by current leader Duke. More importantly, ECU is solidly among the top eight teams which will advance to the NCAA Championship.
ECU shot a 13-over on its first nine holes, but improved significantly to three-over for the back nine to finish with a score of 300.
"I'm very proud of our team," Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "They hung in there and played very well down the stretch. Now we just need to keep it up over the next two days in order to be among the top eight teams."
Junior Margeret Mitchell (Raleigh, N.C.) reached the green 16 times to shoot a one-under 70, which leads the Lady Pirates and is currently tied for fourth overall. Mitchell is just two strokes off the leading individual pace of Furman's Brandi Jackson. ECU teammate Jessica Krasny is not far behind at two-over, which ties her for 14th place.
Other ECU scores include Heidi Helliesen, who is tied for 50th at six-over, and Adrienne Millican and Ashley Leonard, who sit at nine-over and 10-over, respectively.
Play resumes on Friday at 7:30 a.m.
