WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A disappointing performance on day two of the NCAA Women's Golf East Regional saw East Carolina slip back to 14th place on Friday at Salem Glen Country Club.
After shooting a 300 in Thursday's first round which put them in sixth place, the Lady Pirates combined to shoot a 310 on Friday which places them at 42-over par. That puts ECU 18 strokes out of the critical eighth place position; the top eight teams from the regional advance to the NCAA National Championships.
"Unfortunately, we played really poorly today. It was one of our worst rounds all year," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "Just like yesterday, we got off to a bad start and, in the middle of the round, we actually started playing pretty good. Then we just had too many big numbers coming in which effectively took us out of it."
Margaret Mitchell, who was in fourth place after day one at one-under, came in at eight-over on Friday to slide back to 27th. Her rounds of 70 and 79 give her a two-day total of 149.
Heidi Helliesen and Jessica Krasny are tied at 57th with matching two-day totals of 153. Adrienne Millican's total stands at 155, while Ashley Leonard is at 164. Millican had the team's best second round, coming in with a four-over 75.
"Hopefully can get one more big round tomorrow and see what happens," Williams said. We've dug ourselves a big hole and it's going to be tough. I've been proud of the effort these girls have given all year and they continue to surprise me. Hopefully they have one more surprise in store for tomorrow."
Duke continues to lead the event with a two-over-par 574. Joining the Blue Devils in the top eight are Vanderbilt (583), Georgia (584), North Carolina (588), Auburn (589), South Carolina (590), Arizona (591), and Florida State (592).
