October 03, 2004 | Men's Golf
BAYONET POINT, Fla. ? The East Carolina women's golf team recorded a final round score of 294 and posted a 54-hole total 878 to walk away with the team championship at the 2004 Beacon Woods Invitational Sunday afternoon. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 6,015-yard Beacon Woods Country Club in Bayonet Point, Fla.
The Pirates (16-10-0), trailed Coastal Carolina by one stroke heading into final round action Sunday and posted the second lowest team round of the day behind third place Louisville's 282. Coastal Carolina (883) finished the tournament five strokes behind ECU in second place, while defending champion USF and Louisville finished tied for third with a total score of 887.
Individually for the Pirates, junior Heidi Helliesen (214) finished third after a final round two-over par 74. Fellow Pirate golfer Adrienne Millican (217) placed sixth, while freshman Emelie Lind finished 15th.
Louisville's Adrienne White won the individual championship in a sudden death playoff againt Lisbeth Meincke of Georgia State that went to three holes.
This year's tournament featured 11 teams including the defending champions from USF. The field consists of UAB, UCF, USF, Stetson, Southern Miss, Louisville, James Madison, Georgia State, Florida International, East Carolina and Coastal Carolina.
"This was a huge win for us today," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "I'm proud of the way the team competed this weekend and we will build on this for the future. Our team fought like crazy and this is probably the most determined group of girls that I have ever coached. This is truely going to be a great year."
With the team championship, the Pirates have won at least one team title every year since the women's program began in the fall of 2000.
ECU will be back in action on Oct. 11 and 12 when they host the Taco Bell Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek.
