March 06, 2004 | Women's Track and Field
The Lady Pirates are competing against some of the top athletes on the East Coast for the opportunity to garner All-East accolades.
Two ECU athletes broke their own school records on Friday. Pole vaulter Tammie Mentzel placed fourth in her event's competition while matching the ECU mark of 11-11.75, which she shares with Lindsey Rosales.
Tara DeBrielle also broke the ECU mark she had previously set in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:11.60 was the third-fastest in Friday's preliminaries and qualified her for Saturday's finals.
In addition, Colleen McGinn tied for second place in the high jump by clearing 5-7.
"Tara ran very controlled and relaxed and Tammie and Colleen both performed very well," ECU head coach Matt Munson said. "We're very excited about where we are after day one and we're looking forward to a strong finish to our indoor season tomorrow."
The Lady Pirates are on pace to vastly improve upon last season's finish of 29th in the ECAC Indoor meet.
