East Carolina women's golfer Adrienne Millican recorded a third round two-over par 74 to finish tied for ninth place at the Women's NCAA East Regional which was played at the par-72, 6,165-yard Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort. Millican became the first women's golfer in ECU history to advance to the NCAA Championships.
After an even-par round of 72 on Friday, Millican came out and pared the first three holes before making her seventh birdie of the tournament on the par 4 fourth. One hole later at the fifth, she gave two strokes back with a double-bogey and then bogeyed the par-3 eighth to finish the front nine with a two-over 37.
On the back nine, Millican got back into her normal rhythm as she recorded an even par score of 37 to finish with a 74 and a 54-hole total of 222. Over the tournament, she recorded seven birdies, seven bogeys and three double-bogeys.
North Carolina's Meaghan Francella went wire-to-wire to claim the East Regional individual championship as she posted a seven-under par 209, which included two rounds of 69. Fellow Tarheel Ashley Prange, finished second with a two-under par (214). A pair of Duke Blue Devils, Elizabeth Janangelo and Brittany Lange tied for third with a 54-hole tournament score of one-over par, 217.
In the team portion of the regional, Duke (869) also went wire-to-wire to claim the team title and advance to the NCAA Championships. UNLV (891) finished second, 22 strokes behind the Blue Devils and one stroke ahead of the third place Tarheels (892).
"Adrienne played a phenomenal tournament this week," said ECU head golf coach Kevin Williams. "The way she kept her composure after her first round performance, shows the type of player that she is. She had to beat out a lot of great golfers to earn one of the two individual spots at the NCAA Championships. I am really proud of the way she played and represented our program this week."
Millican captured wins over 13 of the top 50 golfers in the country this weekend, and recorded her eighth top 10 finish of the season. She will advance to the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Alabama, which will be held May 18-21.
