
ECU Women's Track Team Named All-Academic

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The United States Track Coaches Association has recognized the ECU Women's Track & Field team as an All-Academic team, after earning a team GPA of 3.08 for the Spring of 2004. Of the 40 women on the roster, 24 earned academic recognition from the University, including a team-record nine Chancellor's List honorees (minimum GPA of 4.0).
The USTCA also recognized three individuals for their outstanding academic and athletic achievement in naming them to the All-Academic team. Colleen McGinn, the 2004 Conference USA outdoor high jump champion, led the way with a GPA of 3.55. McGinn was also the runner-up at the indoor ECAC Championships. Over the course of her career, she was undefeated in outdoor conference championships, winning the CAA title in 2000, and adding the C-USA titles in 2002 and 2004. McGinn is the indoor and outdoor school record holder in the event with a personal best of 5' 8 3/4".
Junior Tammie Mentzel also earned All-Academic honors in posting a GPA of 3.50. Mentzel tied for the bronze medal at the Conference USA outdoor championships, as well as earning All-East honors for her fourth place finish at the ECAC Indoor Championships. Mentzel is ECU pole vault record holder both indoors and outdoors, clearing a personal best of 12' 3 1/2" in 2004.
Senior Tara DeBrielle earned All-Academic honors with a GPA of 3.34. DeBrielle, who will return for a fifth season of eligibility in 2005, claimed the Conference USA outdoor title at 800 meters with a time of 2:12.84. She also posted a school record time indoors of 2:10.51, earning All-East honors at the ECAC Indoor Championships. DeBrielle also ranks second on the ECU all-time outdoor performer list with her seasonal best of 2:10.61.
