Pirate Golf Finishes Tied For Ninth At Adams Cup

NEWPORT, R.I. - The East Carolina men's golf team posted a 36-hole score of 612 (307-305) and finished tied for ninth at the 11th Annual Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic on Tuesday. Third round action was cancelled due to fog that covered the par-72, 7,160-yard Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club.
The thick fog rolled in around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, forcing play to stop with five holes remaining in the round. Scores reverted back to the second round, but there were changes to second round results due to two disqualifications.
Michigan State, the 2003 Adams Cup runner-ups, won the tournament with a two-round total of 575 (281-294), followed by Georgia Southern 584 (286-298), Charlotte 587 (287-300) and host Rhode Island 589 (297-292).
Georgia Southern's Jon David Kennedy was the medalist at 6-under par 138 after firing a pair of 69s. Indiana senior Jeff Overton finished second, one stroke off the lead at 139 (68-71).
The Pirates (16-27-1) finished ahead of Southeastern Louisiana (614), Conference USA foe USF (616) and North Texas (618).
ECU's Adam Howell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) carded a three over-par 75 in second round action and finished tied for 23rd with a two-round score if 151 (76-75). Junior Philip Reale, II (Glenville, W. Va.) finished tied for 31st (77-76=153), Ryan Solan and Martin Nicholls are tied for 37th, just one stroke behind Reale.
The Pirates will hit the links in two weeks when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to participate in the Franklin Street Partners Invitational Oct. 8-10.
