LEESBURG, VA. - East Carolina sophomore Chris Ault (Levittown, Pa.) recorded a pair of even-par rounds of 72 this weekend to finish tied for eighth at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational. The tournament was being held at the par-72, 7,052-yard Landsdowne Resort & Golf Club.
As a team, ECU (35-31-2) finished tied for fourth with a nine-over par 587 (301-286) for their third top-five finish of the fall season. Freshman Markus Leandersson (Hvalstad, Norway) posted his first collegiate top-20 finish with a 36-hole three-over par 147 (76-71). Fellow Pirate Andre Thorsen (Stavanger, Norway) finished tied for 22nd (79-69=148), while Robin Smith (Grifton, N.C.) finished 25th at 149 (75-74) and Philip Reale was tied for 38th (78-74=152).
Eastern Michigan shot a two-over par 290 in the final round and held off a late charge from a pair of teams to claim the team title with a two-round score of two-over par 578 marking the second-straight year the Eagles won the invitational.
EMU led after the first day of play, carding an even-par 288 during a damp and rainy Saturday. The Eagles overall score of two-over par 578 was two strokes better than runner-up Maryland in the 12-team field. Marquette finished in third place at eight-over par 584, firing a tournament-best two-under par 286 on Sunday. East Carolina and Princeton tied for fourth place at 11-over par 587.
Graham Hill of Eastern Michigan, who fired a five-under par 67 on Saturday, shot an even-par 72 and took medalist honors with a five-under par 139. Kyle Murphy (Marquette) finished one stroke back of Hill for second place, while Chad Bricker of Penn State claimed third place honors with a 36-hole score of 141.
"I was proud of the way the team fought back and played today," said Assistant Head Coach Calle Andren. "With the way this team has played of late, especially our freshman, I'm encouraged with what we can accomplish this spring."
The Pirates will return to action next year when they participate in the 2006 Wexford Intercollegiate in Leesbury, Va. on Feb. 27-28.
