Ruther Glen, Va. - The East Carolina men's golf team got off to a rocky start Monday at the Mattaponi Spings Shootout posting a 36-hole score of 597 (21-over par) and currently sits in 13th place. The fourteen-team tournament is being held at the par-72, 6,937-yard Mattaponi Springs Golf Club and is hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
Freshman Andre Thorsen (Stavanger, Norway) paced the Pirates with a three-over par 147 (73-74), which puts him tied for 33rd, just six strokes out of 10th place. A trio of Pirates in Markus Leandersson (Hvalstad, Norway), Robin Smith (Grifton, N.C.) and Philip Reale (Glenville, W.Va.) are tied for 60th at 152, while David Smith (Hamilton, Bermuda) is tied for 68th.
Nationally ranked Wake Forest sits atop the team competition with an 18-under par 558 (279-279) and has a pair of individuals in Kyle Reifers (67-66=133) and Webb Simpson (65-69=134) sitting in first and second places overall.
