
Women's Track Opens Outdoor Season

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Junior Chelsea Salisbury highlighted East Carolina's season-opening outdoor track meet by surpassing an NCAA Regional qualifying standard in the javelin throw during the Seahawk Invitational at the Harold Greene Track and Field Complex over the weekend.
Salisbury recorded a career-best toss of 44.00 meters to place third in the event and earn qualification to participate in the NCAA East Region Championships, scheduled for May 27-28 at Randall's Island, N.Y. In addition, she also established a new personal-best in the hammer throw with a fifth-place clip of 48.19.
Freshman Amy Hart topped the Lady Pirates in the running events, finishing first in the 400 meters with a time of 58.28, while fellow freshman Kerry Girona stood fourth at 1:02.15. Junior Jenee Moore and freshman Chante Sessoms turned in the second and third-best long jump totals with leaps of 5.43 and 5.41, respectively.
Other East Carolina top 10 performances include Sessoms (100 meters/6th/12.66), Moore (100 meters/7th/12.76), Megan Walling (5,000 meters/9th/19:18.90), Brie Berkowitz (400 meter hurdles/6th/1:06.14, pole vault/7th/3.05), Hart (pole vault/5th/3.20), Jessica Georgio (hammer throw/6th/45.04) and Emily Thompson (hammer throw/9th/40.60).
The Lady Pirates finished sixth in the seven-team meet with 55 points, just eight points behind fourth-place Campbell (63) and 1.50 points behind Kutztown, who stood fifth. Buffalo earned the invitational title after tallying 191 points.
The East Carolina women's squad will return to action Friday and Saturday with participation in the Raleigh (N.C.) Relays.
