Lady Pirate Golf Is NCAA Championship Bound

The Lady Pirates (85-57-3) were chosen as the 15th seed in the East Regional, which will be held at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla., on May 5-7.
The East Regional is one of three regional tournaments which will be held to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply.
A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals May 17-20. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region.
The Pirates, in just its fifth year of existence, will make their second appearance in the NCAA Championships. During the 2002-03 season, ECU garnered a No. 12 seed in the East Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C. finishing tied for 14th out of 21 regional teams.
On the season, the Pirates captured its fifth career team title at the Beacon Woods Invitational. Head Coach Kevin Williams led the team to five top-5 finishes and eight top-10's in 10 events. East Carolina is currently ranked No. 55 in the country, according to Golfstat.com.
"I'm real excited for this team," Williams said. "This is a great award and it shows people that East Carolina is building a great golf tradition. We seemed to struggle over our last three events, but now I think the pressure is off since we're in and the team can focus on just playing golf. With the top eight teams in the regionals making the championships, I think we will do well against the field of teams in the East Regional."
The championships finals will be held at Sunriver Resort on the Meadows Course, Sunriver, Oregon, hosted by Oregon State University and Sunriver Resort.
