Pirate Golf Finishes Fourth At Forest Oaks Intercollegiate
April 05, 2005 | Men's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? The East Carolina men's golf team used a final round 298, the second-lowest score of the day, to leap past VCU and claim a fourth place finish at the Forest Oaks Intercollegiate. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 7,197-yard Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
The Pirates (73-65-3) placed a pair of golfers in the top-15 with junior Robin Smith (225) finishing tied for 12th and fellow classmate Philip Reale (226) placing tied for 14th. Senior Adam Howell, who was tied for eight heading into today's action, finished tied for 26th with a 54-hole score of 229.
Louisville's Derek Fathauer fired rounds of 71, 72 and 71 to finish two-under par and won the inaugural Forest Oaks Intercollegiate individual title by two strokes over VCU's Jens Fahrbring.
Fathauer made 15 pars on the course that plays host to the PGA's Greater Greensboro Open on the final day to overcome the two-shot lead Fahrbring entered the day with. That also helped his Louisville squad to the team title with a tournament total of 873. The Cardinals shot just one-over as a team on Tuesday, carding a 289 for the final round.
Louisville carded the two best rounds of the tournament after shooting 286 in the morning round on Monday. Fahrbring finished second after firing a 75 in Tuesday's final round. Three bogies in the first six holes made the lead he built on Monday vanish and created a race that included eight golfers with four strokes over the final nine holes of action.
Davidson's Steve Mayo finished third at one-over-par, followed by Louisville's Charlie Woo. Woo, the first round leader on Monday before shooting an 80 in the afternoon round, came back on Tuesday to shoot his second 69 in as many days to finish the tournament two-over-par.
UNC Greensboro's Jake Lowder and Richmond's Steven Sherck finished tied for fifth at four-over, six shots off the lead.
Coastal Carolina finished a distant second in the team standings, 25 shots off the pace. UNCG was third, two shots behind Coastal Carolina, followed by East Carolina and VCU.
"We started off really well today," said Assistant Coach Calle Andren. "At one point we were tied for second, but couldn't finish. Overall I was pleased with the way we played and think we have some positive momentum heading in to the Conference USA Tournament in two weeks."
ECU will be back on the links April 18-20 when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the 2005 C-USA Tournament.
