LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior Tara DeBrielle surpassed NCAA East Regional qualification standards in the 800-meter run and was one of four East Carolina track athletes to capture a first-place standing during the Liberty Twilight Qualifier at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex late Thursday night.
DeBrielle's personal-best mark of 2:08.84 bettered the regional qualification time of 2:09.80 and also represented the second-fastest 800-meter performance in ECU women's outdoor history, standing only behind Minnie McPhatter's school-record of 2:06.30 set in 1980.
In addition to DeBrielle's accomplishment, senior Nicole Callaham won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.58 to cap the Lady Pirates' track efforts. Senior Alisha Hopkins and junior Chelsea Salisbury paced East Carolina in the field events, turning in first-place performances in the long jump and hammer throw, respectively. Hopkins recorded a leap of 5.74 meters while Salisbury earned her third top five finish of the season with a toss of 47.40 meters.
In addition, freshman Amy Hart stood third in the pole vault (3.35 meters) and senior Krystel Pabey, who returned to ECU's active roster after a two-year layoff to focus on her soccer career, finished second in the javelin with a throw of 39.54.
Other East Carolina competitors include Jenee Moore (200 meters/6th/25.33, long jump/6th/5.40 meters), Martha Bright (high jump/4th/1.53), Jessica Georgio (hammer throw/4th/43.88) and Emily Thompson (hammer throw/5th/43.05). Salisbury also turned in a third-place standing in the javelin event with a toss of 37.33 meters.
"I was pleased with the effort and results," said head coach Matt Munson. "It certainly served as a nice tune-up meet heading into the Conference USA Championships."
The Lady Pirates and men's squad will return to action next weekend, competing at the Conference USA Championships May 12-14 in Houston, Texas.
