HARRISBURG, Va. - The East Carolina women's soccer team got off to a rocky start in the 2005 season opener as the fell to Loyola College 4-2 in first round action of the James Madison Tournament at the JMU Soccer Complex.
ECU (0-1) fell behind early when Ali Andrzejewski scored the first of her three goals in the fifth minute of play from two yards away on Pirate keeper Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.) In the 37th minute, Andrzejewski netted her second goal when she placed a ball in the left corner of the net from 15 yards out.
The Pirates finally got on the board when senior Ashley Stopa (Park Ridge, Ill.) recorded her first collegiate goal in the 40th minute of play going far post from 15 yards.
A trio of Pirate seniors connected on ECU's second goal of the game when Stopa and Kate Lowe (Raleigh, N.C.) connected with Meghan McCallion (Long Island, N.Y.) in the second half to tie the game at 2-2. The Greyhounds (1-0) netted the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute when Lea Day served a cross to Ty Glenn. Andrzejewski would add another goal three minutes later to put the match out of reach.
Four freshman Madison Keller (Clarksburg, Md.), Nicole Moore (Springdale, N.C.), Sarah Biggar (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Campbell along with sophomore Mary Puckett (Sanford, N.C.) all recorded their first collegiate starts in a Pirate uniform.
"We really played poorly during the first half," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "After the half, we were able to re-group and showed what we are capable of doing. We have to learn from this game and come out on Sunday ready to play a talented Richmond team."
The Pirates will square off against Richmond Sunday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m.
