Kimberly Lewellen Named Head Women's Golf Coach At East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kimberly Lewellen has been named head women's golf coach at East Carolina University according to an announcement from athletics director Terry Holland Tuesday.
Lewellen, a 1993 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, joins the Pirates after serving as the head men's and women's golf coach at The Citadel (S.C) during the 2003-04 season.
Prior to her appointment with the Bulldogs, she served as golf tournament director for the Carolina Celebrity Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
During her tenure as tournament director, Lewellen was selected as a member of the 2002-03 Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Golf Team. In 1997, she was nominated as North Carolina's Favorite Golf Teacher in Golf For Women Magazine, while teaching professionally at the Camel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Lewellen replaces Kevin Williams who resigned as the Pirates' head men's and women's coach Dec. 1, 2005 to become the head golf professional at Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro, N.C.
"Kevin Williams has always done a terrific job of recruiting men's and women's golfers, but helping us find Kim Lewellen may be his best recruiting effort of all time," said Holland. "We believe this is a hire that will have a lasting impact on our women's golf program and our whole athletic department.
"Kim is everything we could hope for as our women's golf coach - she is a terrific competitor and still plays at the highest level. She has head coaching experience after leading both the women and the mens program at The Citadel, and as a former student-athlete at the University of North Carolina, she represents the very best of what intercollegiate athletics can and should be.
"We are very fortunate to have Kim and her family as members of our community and we welcome them to ECU and Greenville."
A two-time All-ACC performer and a 1993 All-America selection for the Tar Heels, Lewellen earned a bachelor's degree in speech communications and psychology. During her four-year career, she earned Scholastic All-America honors (1989) and captured the NCAA Eastern Regional Collegiate Golf Tournament Championship as a senior in 1993.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to coach the Lady Pirates' golf team and continue the winning tradition that Kevin started," said Lewellen. "This is a very good and competitive team and I don't see any reason why we should not be able to contend for a Conference USA championship and a berth in the NCAA Championships."
After graduation, Lewellen spent two seasons on the Women's European Professional Golf Tour (1994-95) before gaining full membership status on the Future's Professional Golf Tour, where she claimed her first victory at the Briarwood Invitational in 1997.
Lewellen and her husband John have two children, Jack and Simon.
