Pirate Golf Finishes 11th At Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The East Carolina men's golf team could not sustain its momentum Tuesday afternoon and finished 11th at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
The Pirates (39-41-2), who finished first round action on Monday in second place with a score of 300, posted a second round score of 317 and third of 309 to finish 26 strokes behind the leader at 926.
David Smith led all Pirate golfers posting a 15-over par 231 (71-81-79) to finish tied for 22nd. Andre Thorsen claimed a share of 25th place after a 54-hole total of 232, while Philip Reale and Robin Smith posted scores of 234, tied 38th and Martin Nicholls (t-67) with a 246.
In the team portion of the tournament, Scott Brown, Roberto Diaz, and Clint Smith helped USC Aiken hold off a second-round charge from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga to claim the team title.
The second round, which was suspended by darkness on Monday, was completed on Tuesday morning as was the regularly schedule third round. The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 6,875-yard Wexford Plantation Golf Course.
Chattanooga was second at 907, followed by host Francis Marion University (911), Eastern Michigan University (913), Marquette University (916), Furman University (920), Davidson College and Kansas State University (923), Northern Illinois University (924), Wofford College (925), East Carolina University (926), University of Toledo (927), Miami University (Ohio) (937), University of Iowa (947), and Iowa State University (954).
Eastern Michigan's Korey Mahoney won the individual title with rounds of 71 and 74 on Tuesday to finish at 1-under-par 215. Brown, who led the individual standings after an opening-round 67, fired a 78 and 77 to finish second at 6-over-par 222.
The Pirates will be back in action March 13 when they travel to Aiken, S.C. to participate in the Cleveland Collegiate Championships.
