HOUSTON, Texas --- After rallying to post an extra innings victory over Houston in game one of the doubleheader, East Carolina was unable to duplicate its earlier effort and fell in game two, 8-3.
Laurie Wagner opened the scoring in the second inning hitting a solo home run over the left field fence to give Houston a 1-0 advantage.
The Pirates evened the score at 1-1 on a RBI-single in the third inning by Vanessa Moreno.
Trailing 4-1, the Pirates pulled within a run in the fourth as Krista Jessup delivered a two-run single with two outs.
Beth Nolan and Jessica Potter also singled during the game to account for the Pirates' four hits.
Keli Harrell, who picked up the victory in relief in game one, surrendered four earned runs in 3.1 innings and sustained the loss. Stephanie Hayes pitched the final 2.2 and was also charged with four earned runs.
Houston answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to push its lead back to three and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning for the final margin of 8-3.
Houston and East Carolina will square off Sunday at 1pm in the rubber game of the weekend series.
