PINEHURST, N.C. - The East Carolina men's golf team could not overcome cold and wet weather conditions Tuesday at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate finishing in 17th place with a 36-hole score of 619 (310-309) at The Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8 (7,035 yards, par 72). The tournament, which was hosted by ECU and Indiana) was reduced to a two-round event due to inclement weather.
Martin Nicholls finished tied for 34th with a score of 152 to lead the Pirates (45-62-2). Junior Robin Smith finished three strokes behind Nicholls, tied for 53rd, with a 155, while Andre Thorsen shot 156, David Smith (158) and Chris Ault (159).
Conference USA foes SMU (592) and UAB (596) finished one-two in the team portion of the event, with tournament co-host Indiana (597) coming in third. Rounding out the top five are Charlotte (598) and UNC-Greensboro (599).
Individually, SMU's Colt Knost took home tournament honors with a 36-hole score of one-under par 143 to edge out UNCW's Will Shambley (144). Brandon DeStefano (145-SMU) was third followed by Jason Cuthbertson (USM) and Andrew DiBitetto (UNCC) tied for fourth at 146.
The Pirates will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Greenville, S.C. to participate in the Furman Intercollegiate.
