David Smith Finishes Tied For 17th At Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- Sophomore golfer David Smith carded a pair of even par rounds to post a 54-hole score of 222 and finish tied for 17th at the 37th Furman Intercollegiate presented by Verizon Wireless at the Furman University Golf Course.
Smith, a native of Bradenton, Fla., helped the Pirates (57-67-2) to a sixth place finish with a team score of 895 (301-296-298) finishing ten strokes out of third place. Fellow classmate Martin Nicholls finished tied for 36th with a tournament score of 226 (76-73-77), while Robin Smith and Andre Thorsen each finished tied for 40th at 227. Junior Philip Reale, II posted a 54-hole score of 229 for a share of 51st place.
Maryland, who carded a one over par 289 in each of the tournament's three rounds, finished 12 strokes ahead of second place Chattanooga (299-286-294=879) and 18 strokes better than third place Samford (294-291-300=885). Wofford (295-296-295=886) and Furman (295-296-298=889) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Maryland's Blaine Peffley recorded a final round 67 to claim individual medalist honors. Peffley (70-69-67=206) used seven birdies and fired a 31 on the back nine during a breezy final round to claim medalist honors by six strokes over Western Carolina's Matt Cook (70-72-70=212).The three-round total of 206 marks the lowest winning score since Furman's Todd White posted a 206 to win the 1989 Furman Intercollegiate.
The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they host the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate starting Friday, March 31.
