GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina turned in a team second round total of 294 to take a five stroke lead at the 2006 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship being played the Par 72, 6,216-yard Ironwood Country Club here Monday.
East Carolina owns a two-day total of 591 and leads by five strokes over SMU (596) and Tulsa (596). UCF and UTEP are for place with a two-day total of 597, six strokes behind the Pirates.
SMU junior Jennifer Ackerson tied the C-USA championship record for low round with a 68. Ackerson and UTEP junior Gerina Mendoza, who led the medalist race after the opening round with a 69, are tied for first entering Tuesday's final round with a one-under 143.
ECU sophomore Emelie Lind and freshman Lene Krog led the Pirates with a 71 and 72, respectively, and are tied for fourth place after 36 holes. Lind and Krog were the only two players on the same team to shoot par or better Monday.
Heidi Helliesen and Jamie Quinn also rank among the top 15 on the leader board. Helliesen is tied for 11th at five-over par, while Quinn is tied for 14th at six-over par
Tulsa senior Cas Bridge shot an even par 72 for the second day in a row and sits alone at No. 3 entering tomorrow's final round.
UCF senior Ashley Grier was the third golfer of the day to shoot under par with a 70 as her Golden Knights made the biggest improvement on the second day, improving by nine strokes and tying East Carolina for the top team score of the day.
Memphis is ranked sixth entering the final 18 holes, while Marshall, Southern Miss and UAB are all tied for seventh.
East Carolina will begin teeing off Tuesday morning at 8:54 a.m. along with SMU and Tulsa for the final round.
Pirate fans are encouraged to come out and support the Lady Pirates in their quest for their first C-USA Women's Golf title. Their is no admission charge for the championship round.
The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
