David Smith Tied For Tenth With 18 Holes Left

West Point, Miss. - Houston and Memphis share the second-round lead at 565 (-11) following day two action of the 2006 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship on the par 72, 7,000-yard course at the Old Waverly Golf Club. The No. 42 Cougars erased a nine-shot deficit after posting the low-team round of the day at 280 to pull even with the Tigers, who shot a one-over, 289 following a first-round total of 276.
Junior Pablo Acuna led a trio of Cougars under par as he fired a six-under, 66 to share low-individual round honors with UCF senior Sonny Nimkhum. The Golden Knight veteran shares the overall lead at 138 (-6) with SMU senior Will Dodson, who registered his second-straight round in red figures with a 68. Dodson shot a 70 in the opening round.
Sophomore David Smith fired a second round score of 70, two-under par and currently sits in a tie for tenth place in the individual portion of the tournament.
Dodson has the 35th-ranked Mustangs in third place, four shots behind the two leaders at 569 (-7). Nimkhum helped UCF move within six shots of the lead at 571 (-5) as the Golden Knights had the second-best round of the day at 283. 24 th-ranked Tulsa also came in under par through two rounds after posting a 287 to sit at 572 (-4) for the tournament.
UAB sits in sixth place (577, +1), Rice is seventh (581, +5) and host Southern Miss moved up a spot to eighth at 583 (+7). East Carolina (593, +15) and Marshall (599, +20) also moved up one spot in the standings to place ninth and tenth, respectively. UTEP fell back to 11th at 602 (+26), while Tulane rounds out the team scoring for the second-straight day at 623 (+47).
Houston senior Zach Mowbray and Memphis freshman Brad Benjamin are tied for third in the individual standings at 140 (-4). Mowbray was one of just three players to break par in both rounds as he posted a 69 to go with his first-round score of 71. Benjamin was one-over par at 73, following a 67 in Monday's first round.
Acuna is part of a five-way tie for fifth at 141. The Cougar had the best turnaround from day one, improving nine strokes to a 66 after his first-round score of 75. Two Blazers are among the quintet at 142 as Garrett Osborn and Josh Thompson fired identical even-par scores of 72, following three-under, 69 efforts in round one. Also at 141 are Rice freshman Kyle Kelly and first round co-leader Colt Knost of SMU.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
