
Men's Golf Opens 2006-07 Season Monday

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team opens the 2006-07 season under new head coach Press McPhaul at Southern Pines on Monday in the Mid Pines Intercollegiate.
The two-day, 54-hole event, while will be played at the Mid Pines Country Club, features 17 teams including regional rivals Davidson, Marshall, Maryland, Old Dominion, UNC Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth and Wofford.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
East Carolina senior Phillip Reale set an ECU single round record at the event a year ago, firing a final round of 65; also a Mid Pines Intercollegiate third-round record on his way to a fifth place finish with a seven-under par 209 three shots back of the individual champion. Junior Chris Ault tied for 16th with a two-under par 214.
The Pirates finished tied for fifth with a three-round total of 858.
Senior Robin Smith also returns to the links for his final year of eligibility, while junior Andre Thorsen returns after winning the Norwegian amateur title over the summer. The Pirates return nine lettermen from last year's squad.
The event will also mark the ECU head coaching debut of McPhaul, who spent the past six seasons as the head coach at Vanderbilt. McPhaul guided the Commodores to three consecutive NCAA team appearances during his tenure. The Sanford, N.C. native participated in three NCAA Championships as a player at NC State, helping the Wolfpack to the 1996 East Regional title.
