Conference Opener Against Memphis Ends In 1-1 Tie

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The East Carolina women's soccer team opened up conference play against the Memphis Tigers Friday night and the game ended in a 1-1 tie through two overtimes. This was the third consecutive game that the Pirates played in that was decided in overtime.
Memphis had a great scoring chance in the final minute of regulation when a shot hit the ECU crossbar.
The Tigers (4-4-2) took the lead at the 31:31 mark, when Geneil Newbern put one past ECU goalkeeper Amber Campbell. East Carolina (5-4-2) did not take long to tie up the game as they scored just 26 seconds later. Jessica Swanson recorded her third goal of the season on a pass by Kami York-Feirn. Swanson is now tied with Tara Shaw with the team lead in goals and is tied with Sarah Kirkley in points with eight.
"Memphis was the fastest team we played all season," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I'm happy to get a tie on the road against a tough conference opponent. Mary Puckett played an excellent game for us and so didn't Amber Campbell (12 saves)."
The Pirates are now 1-1-2 in overtime play this season. East Carolina will head to Birmingham, Ala. to play UAB on Sunday.
