Men's Golf Signs Four To National Letter Of Intent

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Adam Stephenson, Conner Sock, David Watkins and Harold Varner, all from the state of North Carolina, have signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play on the men's golf team at East Carolina University, head coach Press McPhaul announced Monday.
"I'm excited about what this group can add to our program," McPhaul said. "I think these four student-athletes can make us better the first day the set foot on campus. There is some nice athleticism in this class. That athleticism equates into a group of powerful players who can create a bunch of speed and get the ball in position to score. They project well to develop into really strong college golfers. I think they will accept the challenge and make the sacrifices here to discover their full potential."
Stephenson attends J.H. Rose High School in Greenville and finished second at the 2007 North Carolina High School boy's 4A golf championships with a two-over par 146.
"Adam's strength is that he has a nose for the hole," said McPhaul. "He just seems to have a natural ability to score. I've seen him hole a bunch of nice shots in competition. He really just seems to have a knack for scoring and that is so hard to learn and even more difficult to teach. That skill will be a huge asset to add to our program."
Sock hails from Hickory, N.C. where he is a member of the boy's golf team that won the 2007 state 3A championship. This past summer he qualified and participated in the North Carolina Amateur Championship.
"Conner can make low scores in bunches," McPhaul said. "He burst on the scene this year for us when he stepped up a level of competition and made the cut at state amateur championships. His putting has made great strides over the past few months. He is a lanky, athletic player that creates a good deal of speed. That power is going to grow as he gets stronger and it will be a real asset."
Watkins hails from Hamlet, N.C. is a member of the boy's golf team at Richmond County High School where he is a three-time all-conference players. He captured the individual medalist honors at the 2007 Carolinas PGA Section Junior Championships by shooting a four-under par at the Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood, N.C.
"David is a gritty, tough competitor who creates a lot more speed than his frame would indicate," stated McPhaul. "He has got a lot of athleticism in his game. He has a quiet competitiveness that is going to add a lot our team's culture. That competitiveness might be his biggest upside."
Varner is a member of the golf team at Forestview High School in Gastonia, N.C. He placed third at the 2007 Carolinas Junior Championships and took individual medalist honors at the 2007 First Tee Walmart Open in Pebble Beach.
"Harold is physically strong," McPhaul said. "He creates a lot of speed and has another gear that is going to enable him to take advantage of some courses we compete on. He came on last summer with some strong play in events across the country. Not one to get intimidated, he has a positive attitude and can make a bunch of low scores in bunches.
