PINEHURST, N.C. --- Indiana sophomore Jorge Campillo shot a five-under par 67 Monday to assume the individual lead and propel the Hoosiers into a first place tie with Michigan after the second round of competition at the 2007 Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade. The Hoosiers and Wolverines are tied at 14-over par (590).
The 54-hole event is being contested at 7,035 yard par 72 Centennial Course No. 8 at Pinehurst Resort and is being co-hosted by East Carolina University and Indiana University.
Campillo is four-under par (140) for the tournament and holds a three stroke lead on Michigan's Billy McKay and Bill Rankin along with SMU's Colt Knost with seven players within five strokes of the lead.
SMU (+16) dropped from first place to third place in the standings, but trail the leaders by only two strokes heading into Tuesday's final round. Penn State (+21), Mississippi (+22), Wisconsin (+23) and UNC Greensboro (+24) are all within 10 strokes of first place.
ECU resides in ninth place after 36 holes with a score of 602 (+26). The Pirates recorded the third-lowest team score of the second round, posting a score of 296. Only Michigan (292) and Indiana (293) had lower scores.
Pirate senior Robin Smith moved from a tie for 21st into a tie for seventh Tuesday, shooting a two-under par 70. Smith is one-over par for the tournament and remains one of the players in contention for medalist honors.
Freshman Tanner Briele (+6) and junior Andre Thorsen (+6) are tied for 23rd, while junior Chris Ault (+14) and freshman Tripp Brizendine (+14) are tied for 70th.
Playing as an individual, ECU sophomore Markus Leandersson is tied for 61st at 12-over par.
The 2007 Pinehurst Intercollegiate concludes Tuesday morning with a 9 a.m shotgun start.
