PINEHURST, N.C. --- Indiana University finished with a 16-over par 880 to claim the team title Tuesday at the 2007 Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade. The Hoosiers entered the final round of competition tied with Michigan at 14-over par, but carded a four-over par Tuesday to capture the title, while the Wolverines shot nine-over on the final 18 holes.
IU sophomore Jorge Campillo earned medallist honors by shooting a three-under par 213 (73-67-73). Michigan's Bill Rankin and SMU's Colt Knost finished tied for second with a one-under par 215 (70-73-72), while Michigan's Bill McKay and Eastern Michigan's Graham Hill tied for third with an even-par 72.
Hill turned in the finest round of the day, shooting a three-under par 69.
The 54-hole tournament was contested at the 7,035 par 32 Centennial Course No. 8 at the Pinehurst Resort and was co-hosted by East Carolina University and Indiana University.
Big Ten Conference members claimed the top four spots in the overall team standings with Michigan (+21) finishing in second place followed by Wisconsin (+25) and Penn State (+26). SMU and Ole Miss tied for fifth at +31.
Co-host East Carolina tallied a three-round total of 909 (306-296-307) to finish in 12th place at +45.
ECU senior Robin Smith carded a three-round total of five-over par (75-70-76=221) to finish tied for 13th place. Junior Andre Thorsen finished at 10-over par tied for 29th. Freshman Tanner Briele and junior Chris Ault tied for 64 at 17-over, while freshman Tripp Brizendine place 79th at 22-over par.
East Carolina continues its spring schedule this weekend, March 23-25, at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., before hosting the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate on April 2-3.
